Five pages in and I am obsessed. Gorgeous writing Five pages in and I am obsessed. Gorgeous writing and very much the kind of story I love. Also: mermaids! (I think. Stay tuned). So glad I requested an early copy from @torbooks and I can’t wait to see where @kellinthewoods takes me. #uponastarlittide
No one believes me when I say this, but I didn’t No one believes me when I say this, but I didn’t think anyone would read this book. All I knew for sure was that I was obsessed with #marthaballard and wanted to tell her story. I believed (and still believe) that small acts, done in love, matter every bit as much as the ones that make the newspaper and the history books. So I opened a vein and gave this book—the one I was certain would be destined for obscurity—everything I had. Almost one year since her publication, I still feel like I have been shot out of a cannon. Last week she landed on the New York Times bestseller list for the first time. And this week she is still holding steady at #6. Thank you to everyone who has read #thefrozenriver and to all those who love Martha as much as I do. I never saw this coming. 📚 ❄️📚❄️📚❄️

I used to be smart. Capable, even. I could sit dow I used to be smart. Capable, even. I could sit down at my desk, open the document, and just…start writing. At one point in my life I even wrote I Was Anastasia (without question my most intellectually challenging novel). And then I decided to write *this* book and suddenly became A Very Dumb Person. It was a good run, I guess. I used to be smart. #amwriting #thepiratequeen #historicalfiction #ireland #graceomalley

Listen: meet your heroes. @leifenger has long been Listen: meet your heroes. @leifenger has long been one of mine and I got to meet him tonight at @parnassusbooks and he couldn’t have been more wonderful. His new novel, I Cheerfully Refuse, is—and I do not say this lightly—even better than Peace Like A River. (A top ten lifetime favorite for me and a novel that still makes me weep. Long live Rueben and Swede!!) Also there tonight was @andrewpetersonmusic and even though I didn’t make it weird by randomly introducing myself, I loved being in a room with the only two male artists who regularly make me cry (in a good way). All of which to say tonight was A++

Hi. Hello. I have fun news! For many years I co-ra Hi. Hello. I have fun news! For many years I co-ran a website called She Reads with @marybethwhalen. We loved doing it and we found something valuable and rare as a result: a real online community. But we retired the site in 2018 to focus on our writing and families (we have ten children and fifteen novels between us—so no small undertaking). But kids grow and seasons change and in mid 2023 we realized that we missed the community we’d built. So we’re bring it back—with a few changes and some help. Last week we officially re-launched as @thebooktide and announced our newest member: @belbeckabby (aka my amazing sister, who keeps us on track.)

What is @thebooktide you ask? Simply put, a community of readers who believe that “a rising tide lifts all books.” We have a lot of fun things planned for this year, not the least of which are a book club and a podcast / talk show. You can head to @thebooktide and click the link in our bio for more info. I truly hope to see you there!! ❤️❤️📚📚
